Psychotherapy

Overview: Psychotherapy is used when a client has an official DSM-IV-TR diagnosis. Bachelor’s level students or graduates are not allowed to do psychotherapy with their clients. Those at that level are to refer the client to a Master’s level graduate or higher if they are seeking treatment for their diagnosis. There are many resources out there that any level professional can use or refer clients to. In Provo one of them is Family Support and Treatment Center.

Problem: I have a student, Peter, who doesn’t seem to have the social skills that other 5th graders do. In discussing his situation with his mom over email she says that he doesn’t pick up on social cues at all, he tends to speak before thinking instead of processing his thoughts before speaking and he likes playing games but tends to get stuck on the same one- he’s open to suggestions but tends to like to play the same one over and over. He likes to be helpful and honest but his honesty gets him in trouble- correcting you for saying something wrong, reporting his helpful qualities and describing his bodily functions in detail. In our sessions I have a hard time getting him to be quiet long enough for me to say anything at all.

What I do: I had previously talked to his mom and she told me that one of Peter’s sister is high-functioning autistic so with that in the back of my mind the thought kept coming up that Peter might have a Austistic Spectrum Disorder. As I read more about Asperger’s it seemed to fit with Peter’s actions and behavior. Currently I am in the process of talking to his mom about the possibility of getting him tested for Aspberger’s syndrome. Since I am only a BSW-I I cannot diagnosis any disorders so I will be referring Peter and his parents to get him tested for Aspberger’s.
